Another nostalgia driven adaptation of a 1970s cop show is set to piss all over the memory of the franchise that ran from 1977 to 1983 – this time with Dax Sheppard and Michael Pena as the iconic Officer Jon Baker and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello in Chips!
This show followed the adventures of two very well liked officers of the California Highway Police. While the show was labeled a drama, it always had a little light comedy to it – but as current trends dictate – if you are going to remake the classic shows of the 70s and 80s we need to lampoon the original franchise and make it into a goofball comedy.
I think I might have more anticipation if they hadn’t pretended this was Chips. There doesn’t seem to be any reason for them to associate that brand with this film. The characters and tone are very different from the franchise they are remaking into a film. But I said the same thing about 21 Jump Street, and I really liked those movies despite all of that.
Also, Kristen Bell (who is actually married to Dax Shepard) has a small role as Jon Baker’s wife. I’d watch literally anything if it has Kristen Bell in it.
What do you think? Fun goofy comedy with way too many homophobic gags? Or a blaspheme upon the name they borrowed.
