Blizzard Entertainment really owes all of its success to the original Warcraft real-time strategy, resource management, topdown-ish combat game – Warcraft.
It started out as a simple fantasy game in 1994, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. This game came on a staggering 12 floppy discs or one CD-Rom and featured two factions gathering resources and building armies to face off in a massive war of point and click warfare. The most revolutionary of franchise was Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos, which featured 3d models and hero characters for the first time.
It wasn’t long after that and we had StarCraft – a 1998 space variant of the original game. Of course the far more popular World of Warcraft MMO would overshadow any of the developer’s products. They still have not returned to the RTS of Warcraft despite taking 12 years before bringing out StarCraft2 with more advanced 3d models and strategies.
But now an intrepid group of modders have taken the basic graphic engine used in StarCraft2 and modified it to re-create the now classic Warcraft 3 and it is utterly beautiful!
This will be high on my list of games to tackle. I can’t wait to re-live my favourite Warcraft title with new technology.
